Krav Maga Online – The Best Way To Learn Krav Maga On Your Own

Is Krav Maga The Best Self Defense System?

I have a strong interest in martial arts / fighting arts and have done for over three decades. A few years ago I became very interested in a new self defense system that appeared on my radar – namely Krav Maga the Israeli fighting system.

I had read about it on and off for quite a while, and that it was ‘starting to appear’ in movies raised its profile. So I started to doing some digging…

ImiIntroducing Mr. Lichtenfeld. Krav Maga is a fighting system that traces it’s development back in the 1930’s to a Hungarian guy called Imi Lichtenfeld (that’s him on the left).

Imi had a background in various fighting disciplines such as Boxing, Judo and Wrestling (as well as Gymnastics) and when he later moved to Israel he percolated and honed all this combat training into a slim new fighting art that became known as Krav Maga (which apparently means ‘contact combat’ – which seems a bit lame to me).

Anyhow, it is very much a no-nonsense, no-holds-barred and no frills system for taking out your opponent as fast as possible. I like things simple and so I liked the sound of Krav Maga, it appeared to have the reputation for being best self defense system for good reason… and I wanted a piece of it!

Can You Learn Krav Maga On Your Own?

Problem that I faced is my home town has no Krav Maga classes and that in any case I travel quite a bit these days, so attending regular class (even if there was one) would be a problem. So I decided that I would teach myself Krav Maga.

I already knew from personal experience that some fight disciplines can be learnt through 3rd party methodologies. I had already learn Eskrima stick fighting from videos online and I even knew a guy who opened up a Wado Ryu Karate school and he was self taught from books and manuals for many years – and when he went for his first official Wado Ryu grading he got awarded brown belt – impressive stuff!

Guy DarSo yes I was confident that one can learn krav maga on your own, the question is how to go about it – books, manuals DVD’s etc, etc? To research this I resorted to Google and did a search of Krav Maga online. And long story cut short that took me to a set of Krav Maga videos by an instructor called Guy Dar – see left.

The best way to learn Krav Maga on your own is without doubt using this set of videos or something similar. The video sequence makes it so simple to follow. There is a complete review of it here, but in summary it’s like this:

The Krav Maga online video course can be downloaded to your computer for you to review at your convenience. It consists of a series of video training clips and a manual.

The videos are in three sections:

1) The Basic Techniques

This is a series of 17 video clips which look at Krav Maga basic hand strikes – including punches, hammer blows, how to use your elbow as well as forearm strikes.

Then there are 7 videos which deal with Krav Maga kicks – thrust kicks, roundhouse kicks, using the knees and (interestingly) striking with different parts of the foot.

What’s great is that even if you are practicing solo, these videos are so clear that it’s a cinch to comprehend and then practice. Remember mastery is all about the basics – whatever fighting discipline you are learning!

2) Krav Maga in Attack / Defense Situations

Now we get to a series of videos that present attack / defense situations using Krav Maga skills against an opponent.

3) Personal Protection (Defense / Offence) Against Armed Enemies

This section rounds off the training series with video clips showing Krav Maga used against armed enemies.

The true beauty of Krav Maga lies in the fact that it’s un-complicated! It’s not fancy, it’s real, down to earth practical and effective! That is what’s conveyed by this Krav Maga training course. You just have to knuckle down (excuse the pun) and practice – practice until they are ingrained into you.

Practicing Krav Maga By Yourself

I want to round this off by saying that practicing Krav Maga alone, though not ideal all of the time, is actually best a lot of the time. And I say this from years of experience! It allows you to fully focus 100% of your attention on what you are doing.

When you deliver a blow you should do it with the focus and the intention of destroying your enemy! Practice every single Krav Maga move as though it was for real. Use your imagination and especially your intent.

Imagine enemies of different heights, different speeds, weights, strengths, weaknesses, some crafty, some slow ponderous but strong, fast, very fast. Do every action as though your life depends on it and you will progress to mastery.
